Fasting on the Day of Doubt

I have noticed that every year, many of us are concerned about the first day of the month of Ramadhan. Therefore, I decided to post a Reliable tradition about the Day of Doubt. It is my opinion that after reading this tradition, many minds will be attain tranquility.  Furthermore, this tradition should remind us of the grace of God and how He has made our obedience to him easy.  It should also remind us of the importance of having the proper intention at all times.  

Without any further note, I present to you the following Reliable tradition.

May all of your prayers, fasts and good deeds be accepted and rewarded by Allah the Almighty.

Arabic Text:

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَجُلٌ صَامَ يَوْماً وَ لَا يَدْرِي أَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ هُوَ أَوْ مِنْ غَيْرِهِ فَجَاءَ قَوْمٌ فَشَهِدُوا أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ عِنْدَنَا لَا يُعْتَدُّ بِهِ فَقَالَ بَلَى فَقُلْتُ إِنَّهُمْ قَالُوا صُمْتَ وَ أَنْتَ لَا تَدْرِي أَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ هَذَا أَمْ مِنْ غَيْرِهِ فَقَالَ بَلَى فَاعْتَدَّ بِهِ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْ‏ءٌ وَفَّقَكَ اللَّهُ لَهُ إِنَّمَا يُصَامُ يَوْمُ الشَّكِّ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ وَ لَا يَصُومُهُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ لِأَنَّهُ قَدْ نُهِيَ أَنْ يَنْفَرِدَ الْإِنْسَانُ بِالصِّيَامِ فِي يَوْمِ الشَّكِّ وَ إِنَّمَا يَنْوِي مِنَ اللَّيْلَةِ أَنَّهُ يَصُومُ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُ بِتَفَضُّلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَ بِمَا قَدْ وَسَّعَ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ وَ لَوْ لَا ذَلِكَ لَهَلَكَ النَّاسُ

Farsi Translation:

به ابو عبد اللَّه صادق (ع) گفتم: شخصى در روز مشكوك كه نمي‏دانسته آخر شعبان است يا اول ماه رمضان، روزه گرفته و بعدا جماعتى گواهى داده ‏اند كه اول ماه رمضان بوده است. ولى به او گفته ‏اند كه نمي تواند روزه خود را به حساب فريضه ماه رمضان بگذارد!؟ ابو عبد اللَّه گفت: چرا، مي ‏تواند روزه خود را به حساب ماه رمضان بگذارد و قضا هم ندارد. من گفتم: مردم به او تذكر داده‏اند كه چون نمي دانستى ماه رمضان است يا نه، اين روزه به عنوان فريضه ماه رمضان محسوب نمي شود. ابو عبد اللَّه گفت: با وجود اين به عنوان فريضه ماه رمضان محسوب مي ‏شود. به آن مرد بگو همين روزه را به حساب ماه رمضان بگذار كه توفيق الهى با تو همراه بوده است. اين را بدانيد كه: اگر سي ‏ام شعبان با اول ماه رمضان مشتبه شود، بايد به نيّت ماه شعبان روزه بگيرند نه به نيّت ماه رمضان. دستور منع براى كسى است كه روزه شك‏دار بگيرد و بگويد: اگر ماه رمضان است براى ماه رمضان و اگر ماه شعبان است براى ماه شعبان. اما اگر به نيت ماه شعبان روزه بگيرد و بعدا معلوم شود كه ماه رمضان بوده است، با فضل خدا و در اثر توسعه بربندگانش روزه او به عنوان فريضه ماه رمضان پذيرفته خواهد شد. اگر اين توسعه نباشد، مردم تباه و نابود مي ‏شوند.

English Translation:

Narrated by Mohamed Ibn Yehya from Ahmed Ibn Mohamed from Osman Ibn Eissa from Sama’a who said: I spoke to Abu Abdullah (pbuh) regarding a man who fasts for one day, not knowing if it is the first day of Ramadhan or otherwise. Some people came [to him] and testified that it was the month of Ramadhan [and] some of them said it [his fast] is therefore not counted.

He [the Imam] said : “Verily, it is [counted]”

I [Sama’a] said: “They told the man, you have fasted not knowing whether it was the month of Ramadhan or not.”

He [the Imam] said, “It [the man’s fast] is counted, for God has guided you to do thus. A day of doubt if fasted in the month of Sha’ban is counted and it is not to be fasted again in Ramadhan. It is forbidden to decide to fast on the day of doubt as if it is Ramadhan but [one must] have the intention of fasting as a day in Sha’ban. If it is confirmed to be Ramadhan then it is counted by the grace of Allah. Thus Allah facilitates affairs for his servants otherwise they would perish.”
